Why 4DOF?

Simulator makers often default to hexapod layouts due to 50 years of inertia from the flight simulator world. But hexapods aren't necessarily the best option when high performance, low pricing, and compact size are priorities.

6DOF platforms move within a complex envelope: Yaw restricts pitch and Z; Z restricts roll and yaw. Optimizing motion within this envelope is difficult or impossible, so many platforms have less real-world range than you'd think. And they usually don’t do any load cueing at all, defeating the purpose of having a "high end" layout in the first place!

The 401cr’s high center of rotation gives it an effective surge and sway range of +/- 8” at the seat of your pants, while simultaneously delivering industry-leading rotation range for consistent motion cues that even hexapods can’t manage. And if you want a one-to-one yaw axis along with your 6DOF platform, get ready to write a seven-digit check and start construction on a new building.

Even non-hexapod 6-axis platforms suffer from increased complexity and restricted motion range. Versus the 401cr, the SimCraft Apex6 GT has roughly equal roll range, half the pitch range, only ±20 degrees of yaw (vs continuous yaw in the 401cr), ±4” of surge and a nearly-useless ±1” of sway (both far less than you have at the seat of your pants in the “4DOF” 401cr), and ±1” of heave – 1/5^th of the commonly used range in the 401cr. And it costs fifty thousand dollars more.
